Lip Synching Competition

On Friday 6th March our senior school had a lip-synching competition in the school hall organised by Mr. Oakey and Mrs Dunbar. There were four groups of children participating. All the children had to learn the lyrics of the songs and pretend that they were actually singing it while the music was playing. The first singer was Jayden who performed "Everything I want" by P-Money. He made the audience laugh with his lip synching, funny actions and dance. Next was SWL who sang "Aint no mountain high enough". Two of them were really good but the middle singer was not sure of her lip synching and actions. After that was our class boys who performed Queen's song "We will rock you." They were dressed as Old School Rock stars and really rocked the audience! Lastly was the KRS Girls who sang "Kiss me through the phone" by Soldier Boy. Makayla was an awesome dancer and looked like she was really singing. The time came for the judges to make their decision. We were not surprised that Jayden came out first, followed by the KRS girls who came second. All of the children got a prize at the end. It was very exciting to watch the lip synching and some of us are already thinking about next year's competition.

Explanation: How to make Putiputi (Flowers) with Harekeke (Flax)

First split the flax into six or eight equal strips using your thumb nail and fingers. Then weave the strips over and under starting from the right. Next turn the flower around and weave again from right to left. After that continue to do this until you reach the end of the strips. Next tie a knot with the left-over strips and cut off the excess if you want to. Lastly leave your flax in your vase to dry up and watch it turn from green to brown.

Class Act Opera - The Magic Flute

On Tuesday 5th August Class Act Opera came to Kelvin Road School to perform an opera called The Magic Flute. The whole school went to the hall for the opera and the children were so excited because it was their first opera. It was a musical show of acting and singing. We laughed a lot and everybody enjoyed the show.

Shared Writing - Iron Brion Show

On Tuesday 24th April Iron Brion came to Kelvin Road School to talk about healthy foods.
The juniors went to the hall first and the seniors went at 11:30.

Mark and May-Lee were the presenters. They introduced Iron Brion who was hiding outside and popping his head up through the window. We counted down loudly to 10 and then he appeared. He was dressed in a grey metal suit with gigantic blue shoes and he had blue spiky hair. He was a funny character who made us laugh a lot. He sneezed loudly “Aaahshoe!” He made a farting noise and blamed May-Lee. He pretended to be a clock and made the tick tock sound for 60 seconds. It sounded so real.

Iron Brion taught us about healthy eating and the four food groups. The meat group has red meat like lamb and beef. Red meat has iron which moves the oxygen in our blood to all parts of our body. The bread and cereals group is important for breakfast. It has fibre which is good for us. Some good cereals are Weetbix, Skippy, Cornflakes, Coco-pops and All bran flakes. Fruit and vegetables have anti-oxidants and free radicals which we need to fight off sickness. Milk and dairy products, like cheese and yoghurt, have calcium which is good for our teeth and bones.

Jayden and Cherieamour were the winners for the stage dance. Iron Brion taught us a song and dance. We had a competition, our Zinc team won so we got the free hamburgers first. The beef burger had lettuce, tomato and sauce – they were delicious. It was a joyful day.

Mansell Hip Hop Girls at School Assembly

On Monday, 13th November 2006, the Hip Hop group of Mansell Intermediate School came to our school assembly to perform their dance. Some of the girls were ex-Kelvin Road School students. They were beautifully dressed in matching outfits and danced to some remixes. They captured the attention of the audience with their energetic and cool moves.
Room 12 really enjoyed their performance. Paki-Paki - Kia Ora girls!

It's Cool To Keep Safe

On Wednesday 8th November 2006 David, Hayley and Yvonne, from KidSafe came to Kelvin Road School to teach us how to keep safe. David told us that each one of us is special and that we are a treasure. He taught us how to handle bullies on the school bus. He talked about the
"Uh-Oh" feeling. That's when someone makes us feel uncomfortable. We learnt about bad touches and what to do. You say "NO!" and RUN, and YELL, then TELL. We learnt a rap that goes like this: "It's cool to keep safe, 'cause my body is mine, I'll protect each part and I'll be just fine."
Then we did a song called My Body has many parts.
At the end Yvonne gave each child a pack of cards and stickers that will help us to remember what to do to keep safe.
